Stress or burnout: how to notice the difference

Stress and burnout are often spoken about as if they are the same thing, but they can feel quite different and may need different kinds of support.

Stress is often linked to pressure, demands and feeling overwhelmed. You may feel tense, anxious, irritable or unable to switch off, but still keep going.

Burnout is usually more long-term. It can involve emotional exhaustion, detachment, low motivation and a sense that you have nothing left to give.

Someone under stress may feel overloaded. Someone experiencing burnout may feel depleted.

Both experiences matter. If pressure has become constant, your body and mind may be asking for change, rest and support.

Therapy can help you understand what is driving the pressure, explore healthier boundaries, and begin finding a more sustainable balance.
